What is Commercial Interior Design?

When most people think of interior design, they are primarily only thinking about residential interior design. What comes to mind for most are bedrooms, kitchens, bathrooms, etc. However, a significant portion of the interior design industry is commercial interior design. But what is commercial interior design?

What Is Commercial Interior Design?

Commercial Interior Design has been around for a long time and has traditionally been executed by larger architectural and design firms, but as times change, so do commercial interiors preferences, opening doors for smaller design firms to make a creative impact on office interiors. Even before the pandemic, we began to notice a shift in corporate interior design, favoring a more hospitality-inspired approach.

The last two years of the pandemic have driven even more change to corporate environments, where consumers are now looking for a home-like environment that feels warm, safe, and draws inspiration from home interiors and the hospitality industry, with biophilia, or a desire for greater connection with nature, inspiring a design that brings the outside environment inside. With all of these new developments, the proper approach to office interior design is becoming increasingly important in modern office spaces. If the interior design of your office is done correctly, your company will benefit from a better atmosphere, a boost in morale, and, most importantly, a boost in productivity. Your employees want to work in a welcoming and visually appealing environment. However, commercial interior design does not stop with office spaces.

Commercial Interior design runs the gamut of businesses, whether it be a local diner or a five-star hotel. In the case of a five-star hotel, quality interior design is essential in impressing guests and maximizing profits. Most luxury hotels are very keen on including high-quality amenities such as spas, gyms, pools, bars, etc., so designing a space that will allow for those amenities and make it all as beautiful as possible is the top priority for any commercial interior designer. However, over the last decade, we have seen a rise in popularity of various boutique hotel brands in the United States, all of which used to be more prevalent in Europe and Asia. The competition on the boutique hotel front is fierce, as the interior design, the overall experience and the strive to accommodate all six senses presented within the spaces, has in many cases outdone some larger five-star hotel offerings the public is used to.

Commercial interior designers are not only experts in creative space planning and technical execution. When it comes to the interior design of any commercial space, whether office, hospitality, or healthcare design, we believe in developing every project from the inside out, which means starting with the target consumer, working with the client to develop a captivating story, and infusing that story into every stage of the project and every element of the final product. The goal is, of course, a satisfied client, but also a consumer who can feel and appreciate every detail immediately upon entering the space and who can continue that intentional experience throughout their stay, making them want to come back again and again.
